Brian Waterman, Ph.D., MPH is Division Vice President of Solution Strategy and Development for the Hospital Industry Data Institute of the Missouri Hospital Association. In his role, he is responsible for ongoing development, delivery and positioning of analytic decision support solutions designed to help hospital leaders improve outcomes and quality while reducing cost. Focal areas for current solutions include tools and technologies to support hospitals to reduce avoidable readmissions, manage performance with episode-based care bundles, forecast future services demand, assess community health needs, and identify physician-level practice variation related to cost and quality. Dr. Waterman directly oversees the work of a team of cross-functional contributors leveraging a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) approach. Dr. Waterman’s career efforts have primarily focused on applied analytics to support clinical research and hospital management decisions around measuring and improving quality. Prior to joining HIDI, Dr. Waterman served as the Director of Analytic Services for Truven Health Analytics (now IBM Watson Health) and prior to that, as Director of Healthcare Informatics within the Center for Clinical Excellence at BJC Healthcare in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Waterman earned an MPH with a concentration in Biostatistics in May 1997 and his Ph.D. in Health Outcomes Sciences in May 2017 from Saint Louis University College of Public Health and Social Justice. Dr. Waterman’s research interests include physician performance measurement, enterprise surveillance methods and applied clinical decision support.
